The team thought they had done a good job. They'd caught the bad guy, managed to avoid getting injured (always a plus where some were concerned) and sure their boss, the Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs had done things slightly unorthodox, but it wasn't anything to big. Or at least it wasn't big enough to be causing this.
And what was this? This was the raised voices, the ones that caused Tony DiNozzo to cringe and mentally pray that one of these days his boss would learn not to piss off redheads, the ones that caused Ziva David to smirk at her friend and sigh for her boss because she knew it wouldn't end for awhile, the ones that would cause poor McGee to try and slip off to the lab only to be brought by Abby, who would protest quietly about 'Mom and Dad' fighting. They had started on the second floor and everyone who was still around the squad room knew to bail quickly or to get caught in cross fire. Most decided it was time for a coffee break or needed something from else where, but Tony, Ziva, McGee and Abby had no where else to go, that and they knew that each party arguing could quite easily kill the other and to avoid blood shed in NCIS, decided to stay. That didn't stop them from wishing it would be over soon, but judging from the loud voices coming down the stairs now, it was going to be an all out fight.
"If you think you could just counter mind my authority..."
"It was the FBI..."
"That does not excuse you from at least treating them somewhat decently."
"They don't deserve any consideration when they're responsible!"
"When you THINK they are responsible! You have no evidence except your infallible gut!" Came the sarcastic retort as the voices and bodies reached the main level. "And aside from THAT, you blandly disregarded what I said about not interfering!"
"I thought it was a request," Gibbs defended mockingly and the team knew that was where the fight was getting good.
"A request. Well perhaps you should follow requests more often!"
"Maybe you should just take a break and let this cool..."
"Unlike you Agent Gibbs, we can't all go on Margarita safaris whenever we please!"
"You should try one Madame Director," he quipped back. "Might do you a world of good," came the mumbled last bit and Tony managed to hear it and pray to all that was holy that the Director did not.
"What was that Agent Gibbs?" He didn't respond and both Tony and McGee exhaled in relief, one blow up was bad enough, but a blow up on top of another one would just be death in disguise.
"C'mon its not like you wouldn't have said the same thing to the Director of the FBI," Gibbs mentioned offhandedly.
"Yes of course, I would have called him a crass egotistical asshole to his face," Jenny quoted.
"I didn't use those words."
"No? My mistake, that was what you said when you didn't think he could hear you!" She snapped in anger, this time the anger was truly coming through and Gibbs could see fury flash into her eyes.
"He shouldn't believe everything he hears."
"You are completely out of line, and I swear one more, one more this week and its desk duty for you and your team for the month!" She threatened.
"No!" Ziva whispered loud enough for Jenny to hear and Tony glared at her.
"No what Officer David?" Jenny demanded from.
"Nothing Director, my apologies for interrupting," Ziva answered.
"Ziva." Gibbs voice told the young woman to shut up now and she did glaring back at Tony.
"Agent Gibbs you can apologize to the Director of the FBI and..."
"I think I'll leave the ass kissing to you."
"You think this is all my job is, saving yours? I don't have the time to deal with the fact that you've ruined two years of cooperative work between NCIS and the FBI!"
"Wouldn't want to keep them waiting," Gibbs muttered loud enough for her to hear.
"I suggest you seriously rethink your position on this Agent Gibbs," She warned icily and moved toward the elevator. The door shut behind her and Gibbs turned to his team.
"Finish those reports, then go home!" He stormed off toward the back stairs, the door slamming behind him.
"The kids really, really hate it when Mommy and Daddy fight," Abby sighed.
"Yea, it never ends well for us," Tony remarked.
"Odds of them making up?" McGee questioned.
"Slim to none, Jenny was in rare form today, she used Mexico."
"I didn't think the Director of the FBI heard Gibbs anyway," Tony sighed. "He probably opened his mouth. Man with three exes you would think he'd learn to stay on a woman's good side."
"You haven't yet Tony, and you've known far more women," Ziva teased and so the banter fell back in. Reports were slowly completed and each little Gibblet prayed that Mommy and Daddy would be in better moods the next day.
---
"You think they bought it?" She remarked as she opened the door to her house and found him standing in the entryway.
"Oh yea, right about now Abby and Tony are hoping Mom and Dad stop fighting soon. The desk work was a little dramatic Jen."
"Consider it payback for the Madame Director comment," she replied. "So Jethro, where to?"
"I was thinking that French place by the river," he tried hoping it sounded good.
"Dressed like this?" She was only in a business suit and had been home barely a minute when she'd seen his car pull up.
"They do take out." He said holding up the large bag.
"Much better," she praised letting him into the house. They settled in front of the fire in the study, the room that already held so many memories for both of them. She laid out the food dishing it out, while he got to wine glasses and opened the bottle.
"Happy Anniversary Jen."
"Happy Anniversary Jethro," she replied softly leaning in as he kissed her softly. Just a step away from the kiss becoming the only thing that would be accomplished they both pulled back, struggling for control of their own breaths and heartbeats.
"So tomorrow?"
"Cold shoulder till lunch, I'll surrender."
"Coffee?"
"Of course," he sighed pulling her closer again. Dinner was forgotten as the lovers celebrated their special day the best way they knew how.
